Bauji is my maternal grandfather and was happy to see him last weekend.
Biji passed away on 9-Jan-2007, after a protracted illness

Once upon a time there was a lion, he had 3 cubs. Since the lion was getting old he was not able to hunt properly and was very hungry. One day he thought he will eat one of his cubs, but then thought How can I eat my child. So he kept on being hungry , got old and died one day

Moral of the story - as told by D (honest!!)

जब कुछ खाने को मिले , उसी टाइम खा लो !! (when you get something to eat, eat it right then~~)

To Nanu folding some clothes and obviously not paying 100% attention to D (which is unacceptable right ? ) - नानू , नानी आप से सारा काम क्यों करवाती हैं ? ( Nanu , why does Nani make you do all the work ?)

I used to love playing with Lego, as a kid, i remember my dad had brought me a set from his deputation @ Libya through Border roads organization. So this year , on her 5th bday, we presented D a lego set

She quite enjoys it and with a little help , made this set, a house and two girls

Well the day turned out ok, D and I went to Dominoes for a lunch all by ourselves :) It helps when your daughter mirrors your likes for food, and you get a treat, while taking her out for a treat :)

Hard to believe that the bundle of joy that we were bestowed upon on 26th May 2005 is FIVE YEARS old..
I still remember it was pouring buckets that day in bangalore, I guess among the rainiest days in bangalore

Sharing an old photo of D, we had this enlarged and framed and Nanu / Nani have it mounted on the wall in Hisar

So today, D was up at 5am (she was, I wasnt) , and off to the park with Nanu , Nani for her "morning walk" (read swings)
came back and watched her favorite shows - oggy and the cockroaches (Ughhhhhhhh) and Mickey mouse club house,
trying to get her to bed so that she is fresh for the long day ahead

Have promised to take her to Saphire (a big toy store in bangalore) and she gets to pick what she wants..

In our family, especially D's Pop (me) and D's Dadi have Happy Tummies...thats D's way of politely saying that we have big bellies / tummies..
Only person designated with a sad tummy is her mom and now with Nana , Nani visiting they are added to the list

Now D calls her own tummy - as a smiley ( a lil happy) so is very eager to try out the exercises that Nani is teaching her
After learning the first set of exercises, off she went to dadi's room and told her, if you want sad tummy do these exercises otherwise your tummy will keep on getting happier
While Dadi was trying the exercises, D quickly changes the TV channel to her favorite cartoons and tells Dadi you exercise, I will watch TV

D is a water baby.. in her own words she is happy to stay in the pool 24 hrs a day
Last year she had started her swimming classes and ended up learning to float, with the help of the arm bands
this year, we enrolled her in another swimming clinic, and this time no arm bands

Today was the 11th class, and they have started encouraging the kids to jump (help them by lofting them up in the pool :) ) in the pool and swim across

To my and even the coaches surprise D actually swam across the breadth of the pool

she was really great, didnt give up in the middle of the pool and continued splashing away...
tomorrow will try and get a video of the great swimmer....

Blogging after quite some time..
D's dadi had a hear attack and had to get an angioplasty done, one her arteries was blocked
D's eldest Bua was in India and were planning to come over to Bangalore around 25th Jan but due to the above came over a couple of days earlier
D was really looking forward to their visit, besides the fun of playing with her cousins who are ~16 and ~10, the most important aspect was that she did not go to school at all on their last trip ..this time around also she missed a lot of school but we did send her on Fridays to ensure she gets the weekly update and also thankfully her class photograph for LKG was to be done on a Friday, she made it to that too
(was very happy to report that she was asked to sit in the middle of front row :) )

Lohri is a festival celebrated in the north india to mark the passing of winter
As a kid in Ludhiana, Punjab, this was a day to look forward to as the whole city used to stop their usual chores and spend the day flying kites. The sky would look like it was infested with bees, and kites would be everywhere...

Today is Pongal and a holiday for all of us, D got a star and a good for her coloring yesterday at school - mighty thrilled

Yes, I was ranting about falling behind in the course work , so how come the Third post in a day..

Well friends its due to various factors

D woke me up at 7 AM ( I slept at 2AM) - and आज तो आ बैल मुझे मार हुआ | Had woken up at 7am to take a leak and thought it would be a good idea if D also does the same , so that she can sleep longer... HA!!! ( I guess I don't need to spell it out )
She always threatens me that
आप मुझे स्कूल वाले दिन उठाते हो और मॆं आपको छुट्टी वाले दिन उठओंगी (You wake me up on school days, I will wake you on Holidays) - and she carries out the threat every Sat / Sun
Her favorite line on weekends / holidays - Early mornings is
सुबह हो गयी क्या ? मुझे छुट्टी के दिन नींद नहीं आती ... unfortunately मुझे बहुत आती है :(
Avoidance - yes I have to study, but guess what blogging and writing about D is much more pleasurable than studying

Today we need to take D to get her a new school bag - The requirement from D is - IF I get a bag with both Princess and Barbie in the same bag - I will settle for one, else I will buy 2, one of princess and one of Barbie
And knowing how savvy the Barbie/Disney folks are - I believe I might end up buying 2 bags...

Oh well it is childrens day and I have only one to pamper (read spoil :) )

In India, 14th Nov - today is celebrated as Children's day.
This was the birthday of Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of India.
Children used to call him Chacha Nehru, as he was very fond of kids and did a lot of work for the betterment of kids in India.
Come Friday - 13th, D was supposed to go to school dressed as Nehru -
White Kurta - Pajama, Topi and the Red rose (trademark of Nehru)
We managed to get one ready made kurta pajama, which was a size bigger, but the practical person in me advocated that next year it will come in handy too - hehehehe

I have deliberately morphed Ds face - I know am a little paranoid when it comes to D.

In class they also made this Rose out of clay, D's teacher helped and sure looks pretty

This whole week was fun filled , kids went dressed in colored clothing of their choice, no uniforms!!

GuruPurab, the birthday of Guru Nanak ji was celebrated on 1st Nov 09
(yes this post is delayed - but have been too much stressed at work and I started another course , BugAdvocacy from AST - smart right :(, especially after the IIM course was done had said no more, no tests no exams - and guess what within 2 months am on another course - I guess I will never learn)

What I really like about the current curriculum of D is that the school ensures the kids are aware of all the festivals and by making them color the drawings, I feel they will learn much more and absorb more

Today 7th November is the 11 wedding anniversary of D's younger Bua.
Bantu Phupha is always pulling Ds leg that I want your Pink - Frock, Jacket, Doll etc (yes pink is omnipresent) and D gets all worked up because of that

So yesterday when we were out looking for the anniversary gifts, D came up with a priceless gem

D: Papa, I want to tell you something (पापा मॆं आपको कुछ कहना चाहती हूँ )
Me : Yes
D : Please get Phupha a pink shirt, so that he stops hankering after my stuff (फूफा को पिंक शर्ट ले कर दे दो, ताकि वोह मेरी चीज़ों को छोर्ड दें )

The Rajyotsava Day or Kannada Rajyotsava is celebrated on 1st November every year to commemorate the formation of State of Karnataka

Ds school celebrated the function today 11/2 , as 1st Nov was a Sunday
D too went dressed in the flag colors, Yellow T Shirt and Red Pants (ala Govinda ...)

Anniversary and Halloween

Today is 31st Oct 09 - incidentally our (Ds parents) 8th Anniversary
Thank you for the wishes in advance :)

We had planed to go out for lunch rather than the traditional dinner , well that is till D refused to join us :(
Every Saturday - after her Abacus class she wants to go and visit her friends (B) place
usually she is the first to want to go to restaurants /eating out, but this time friend and the lure of playing proved stronger

At her friends appartment, they had arranged a Halloween party and D too joined them

I went to collect D in the evening, and she actually was v glad to come running to my arms, turns out she was a lil frightened of a boy who was all dressed up
She did collect a bag full of sweets and candy :)

PS our lunch was good, though we missed D, we both each had a sizzling sizzler , was great...had to walk for an hour to walk off the food :)

D got her report card for LKG Ist Term , along with a lot of A+, there were a few B+ and 3Bs (writing, number quantity and peer interaction)

so for writing and number quantity we now put in work , whoever said schooling / trying to get kids to study was easy...

At her last parent teacher meeting the teacher had mentioned that she is only friends in class with one - Sakshi, who incidentally lives close by and they share the same bus too. The teacher said that despite us making both D and S sit seperately , these two then stand from where ever they are seated and start talking.. persistent...

When D asked about her report card, and when informed that teacher said more work required on writing and numbers, started crying.. we are v touchy...

Shin Chan

D is a big fan of Shin Chan and wants to watch it back to back to back
(Even I like him :) )
Beneath all the naughtiness, there is some good hidden...

On our last visit to school , they had a book stall and D pounced upon a coloring book featuring, who else , Shin Chan

She has been hard at it, the first image is when she had patience and I guess its evident that by the end of second coloring session she was running out of it fast
and to think of it, her name is supposed to mean patience (HA!)

We Won a Prize !!

D came back from school super excited.
Called up her mom first thing, with help of Dadi (of course) and said

D: Thank u bolo mujhe ( Say thank u to me)
A: Why
D : I got your prize
A : For what
D : For your cooking, Madam gave me your prize

Her teacher had given her a prize for Sundays Non Fire Cooking

PS turns out we won the third prize, D insists its first prize so we are going by that one

NonFireCooking

D's School had organized a non fire cooking for the parents and kids today
So we landed there bright and early, carrying 2 bags filled with chopping boards, graters, peelers, knives, mixing bowls and loads of ingredients
This was after we (primarily D's mom ) having spent ages searching for something appealing to make

Following is the finished product, the bread is filled with yummy salad ( I can attest to the fact)

This drew rave reviews and comments and our creation was among the most photographed ones at school :)

Besides ours there were quite a few interesting ones that other parents had rustled up, and it was fun event overall

Happy Diwali

Wishing all of you a very Happy Diwali

Being her 5th Diwali, D had much more awareness this time around
List of demands pretty specific

Barbie dolls as Diwali gift ( i think we can just replace the festival / occasion , keeping the gift constant)
ROCKETs..and loads of other crackers - no bombs though
Her favorite sweet - Kaju Katli

The day passed with D pestering her mom to get out of bed and make the rangoli , burning the crackers through the day and in the evening a quick pooja followed by further bursting crackers...

Turns out D already has her eyes set ...
Being Diwali, D's mom dressed up in a Saree for office with the heels
Back home we realized that D had commandeered the heels and was strutting away happily...

At Karvachauth, D had taken exception to the fact that her mom put on nail polish but didnt allow D to do so

At that time , it was mutually agreed that D will get nail polish done on Diwali
So come diwali, D got her wish and was mighty pleased about it too

Nariyal Barfi

Diwali is round the corner and D was all excited to make sweets with her mom

Dolls

D has recently really taken pains to keep the doll house in pristine order
she is very meticulous and ensures that its in order and dolls are in their designated spaces - per her wishes

I realize on a daily basis, The importance of encouragement to kids cannot be emphasized be it from parents and especially from teachers, who kids like D hold in very high esteem

Today is KavaChauth
D's mom had gone to get mehandi done on her hands, so Lil D being a girl and a very perspective one at that , also wanted to get mehandi on her hands
Below is the art work which her mom did on her hands

It was looking much better after it had dried and was washed :)
You can see a peacock on her right hand, the left one well....

Update : Fishes

Update wrt Fishes

I had mentioned that we had 5 fishes in the aquarium
Now we are down to 4

Blacky was lying on the floor of the aquarium, and D was trying to get her to wake up to eat
D realized in a while that Blacky is no more, and big tears started rolling down her cheeks :(

I guess this would be among the first times she saw death...

Anyways on a slightly cheerful note, the hunt is ON to replace Blacky, but turns out that particular fish is not available
so D has kindly agreed to adjust to a gold fish, I think I will buy her a couple

D joins dancing classes

D's friend has been going to dancing classes for some time and obviously D too wanted to join in.

Thankfully there were slots available now , and today was her first dance class

I was lucky enough to be back from office and saw the lil angels and a couple of young devils dance and have fun
